‘Poor nutrition leads to poor health’ is a basic concept many of us are familiar with. In fact, the foods and drinks you consume in your daily diet can have a significant impact on your dental health. A diet high in sugar, carbohydrates and starches can contribute to the production and formation of plaque acids. A build-up of these acids can cause a breakdown of the tooth enamel, leading to cavity formation and other issues such as gum disease or tooth decay over time.

Almost all the processed foods we buy at the supermarket today contains added sugar. Therefore, it is important that we are aware of the ingredients in the foods we are consuming to prevent any kind of damage to our oral health.
To help you become a smarter shopper, Putney Dental Care has come up with a pre-purchase checklist you must consider before buying or consuming a product. It all starts with understanding the ingredients label. By law, every product has a nutrition panel on the side of the packaging. Many of us are unsure of what to look for when reading this table.
So, what do I need to look for?
- Total Fat: choose foods which contain 10 grams or less per 100 grams. This does vary depending on the product. If you choose milk, yoghurt or ice cream, opt for 2 grams or less per 100 grams. As for cheese, choose 15 grams or less per 100 grams.
- Saturated Fat: this is an important ingredient to reduce, aim for the lowest per 100 grams. A good guide would be choosing any foods which have 3 grams or less per 100 grams.
- Ingredients which show signs of foods high in saturated fat include: palm oil, animal fat (beef fat), coconut cream and vegetable shortening.
- Sugars, less than 15 grams per 100 grams
- Avoid food high in sodium.
