Oral Cancer As Told By A Top Dentist In Ryde

On a global scale, dental diseases are among the top 10 most prevalent health problems. From dental caries in young children to gum disease in people over 60, dental care issues arise at any age. But there is one that strikes fear with just two words—oral cancer.

“The survival rate is only 50% for patients living with the disease for over five years after they have been diagnosed, “ says Dr. Danielle Do-Vuong, principal dentist at Putney Dental Care. “Often, oral cancer goes undetected until it has reached an advanced stage,” she adds.

Sydney Cases of Oral Cancer

Oral cancer affects the entire mouth area—lips, tongue, roof of the mouth and inside of the cheeks. It also occurs in the salivary glands or in the back of the throat.

Insidious in nature, this type of cancer is on the rise in Sydney. It still has a relatively low occurrence in the area and it is best to keep it that way.

According to Dr. Danielle Do-Vuong, oral cancer is largely preventable for many patients. “We find that oral cancer is caused by a number of lifestyle choices,” she says.

Alcohol Intake

Consuming alcoholic drinks is not bad but excessively downing bottles of beer or glasses of liquor does have a negative impact. The higher the alcohol content, the more hazardous the beverage is to your health. Understand that the burn you feel each time will have adverse effects on your throat.

Smoking Habits

We also advise our dental care Ryde patients to take it easy on their nicotine consumption. This includes smoking cigarettes as well as chewing tobaccos. As with alcohol, this burns the throat and increases your risk for oral cancer.

HPV Infection

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) can be transmitted through oral sex. Sexual activity of this nature heightens one’s chances for developing oral cancer as well, oropharyngeal cancer or throat cancer in particular.

To know your risk for oral cancer, call Putney Dental Care on (02) 9808 2588. Our Ryde dentist will perform a screening to check for symptoms. These can be anything from jaw swelling to difficulties in chewing, swallowing and speaking.

Feel free to drop by our Ryde dental care facility to know how to reduce your chances for oral cancer today.
