Accidents and unexpected incidents can happen anytime, and anywhere. Sometimes, sharp pain can arise from out of nowhere, and pain can originate from a single tooth, several teeth or surrounding tissues. It may also be caused by something else entirely yet feels like it’s coming from one or more teeth.

Receive safe emergency dental services at the time you need it the most at Putney Dental Care. Situations calling for emergency dental care may arise at any time of the day, especially when you least expect it, it is important to have a qualified health practitioner there for you.

For many of our dental patients, it was because they had:

  • severe pain
  • experienced swelling extending to the face or jaw
  • a fractured tooth
  • a dislodged tooth due to a sporting incident

It is important to remember that all dental emergencies should be addressed and attended to by dental health professionals. Make sure to visit a reputable emergency dental treatment facility and do background checks on the dentist to be sure it is right for you.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A medical emergency is viewed as a severe condition that poses an immediate threat to one’s overall health and life whereas a dental emergency doesn’t necessarily fit the same description. Dental emergencies come in various forms—from a newly broken tooth to a nagging toothachewhereby an emergency appointment is necessary. You can also lookout for a dental problem when there is facial swelling which may signify exposed nerves or gum infection.

There are cases too where pain is not a factor. Regardless, there is still a sense of urgency involved in attending to these conditions. For instance, a person may have their porcelain veneers chipped or have loose dentures. These two examples are actually painless but they still cause a great deal of stress for cosmetic reasons. And it’s not just for those who are overly critical about their own appearance, it could be because they have a job interview to attend the next day or a bridal photoshoot coming up.

Tooth Dislodgement (Avulsion)

A common mistake following the dislodgement of a tooth is to delay its placement back into the socket. If it is clean, replant it immediately and handle the tooth only by its crown, not the root. If it is dirty, on the other hand, wash with some milk NOT warm water. If you do not know how to reposition the tooth, keep the milk there or at least, within the patient’s mouth so that it stays hydrated with saliva. The tooth then requires splinting to have it fixed and locked in place by a dentist. If it is not a knocked out tooth but there is a sharp pain, it could still be chipped or fractured which means you should avoid hot or cold foods until you have had a dental check-up. Keep an ice pack to your cheek if you feel severe tooth pain to attempt to numb it.

Lost a Crown?

Another emergency is when individuals lose their dental crown, whereby the tooth is vulnerable and painful. You will need to eat on the other side of your mouth until this is solved, but ensure you see a dentist as soon as possible to have it refitted. It may also be a sign of decay and the tooth will be more vulnerable to infections. If you have the crown, bring it with you to the dentist to be recemented, otherwise, we can assist you in protecting it whilst a  new one is to be made.
